May the force be with you...

Did you think I was talking "Star Wars"?  Nope, I'm talking bulbs for the indoors...

Of course we could talk about the movies... but then I'd have to confess that I'm one of the approximately 5 people that has never seen "Star Wars"... I did see the "Empire Strikes Back" but never felt the need to go back and see the first or third or the prequels or the sequels or whatever they all were.

And I must say, I did purchase the Blu-Ray set for my soon to be son-in-law as a recent holiday gift... he was very excited... he went on to say how he can still remember the first time he saw them and couldn't wait to watch them again... does this make me a cool soon to be mother-in law?  I hope so... who says money can't buy love?  Of course I can't let on that I've only seen number 2, which probably isn't one of the better ones... I'd probably loose some points.

But obviously I've really, really digressed here.... I started out wanting to say a bit about forcing bulbs and ended up talking about movies from the 70's, 80's and 90's with spaceships, robots, hairy beasts and women with donut hair (yes, I do know some of the characters).

So before I get off topic again.... I've been forcing paper whites for the last 4 or 5 years.  So very easy and such an inexpensive way to brighten up the indoors when not much else is happening.

I do purchase new bulbs for forcing... I also like to change up the containers.... but I always put them on the dining room table.  This year the container is a galvanized tin container with another galvanized mold, vintage of course, inside holding just one of the bulbs.

I don't usually get my gravel/rocks at a garden store when I pick up the bulbs.  I like to use aquarium gravel from the pet store instead... it's cheap and it comes in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes.

This year my flowers grew and blossomed quicker than ever... maybe it was the cold snap and the heat wave indoors from running the furnace and gas stove a bit more that got them going so quickly.

No matter, they certainly have brightened the place up... which is exactly what I need during a cold, grey and sometimes white month.  And now I need to get over to Netflix and add "Star Wars" to my queue... don't want to mess up my "MIL" status before the wedding!

  1. such beautiful flowers. they are so precious. i'm so shocked ... you really need to sit down immediately with a good bowl of popcorn, your favorite drink & a warm blanket. tell everyone not to bug you & watch all star wars movies. asap!! it will be a mark off your "bucket list". my father & brother helped usher me into the world of star wars. we would listen to the record often. the soundtrack is awesome. not that they new additions to the movie brought out recently are not good. but i prefer the older movies. wish you happy watchings. (:

  2. Your paper whites are beautiful and must make you feel so happy to know you grew them. I've always wanted to do that but felt it would be complicated or difficult. I am in the same small group of normal people who haven't seen those movies. Just not my taste in movies. To each her own, I guess. How about showing these beautiful flowers at my Your Cozy Home Party. Anything pertaining to making the home a cozy place to live is what we want to see. These paper whites would be perfect to cozy up a long winter. Hope you can join in the fun. ------------ Shannon

  3. I tried that with my crocus. They just looked like they were drying out so I put them back outside...as for the star wars, I have never seen any of them, and never will.

  5. Yea I can comment on your blog. Last week I could only read it in Reader, when I clicked over to comment I just got a blank page. Love the snow pics from last week. The ice on the windows was so beautiful. I was a little jealous but I will take our 75* & sunny weather today. Forget about forcing bulbs, our daffodils are blooming already!

  6. Don't tell, me either . . . never did the Star Wars "stuff" . . . However, I need not worry . . . not in MIL wedding mode . . .

I love the fragrance of the Paper Whites as much as seeing the flower . . . makes the house have a fragrance of springtime . . .

  7. This was the first Christmas that I didn't have an Amaryllis and I really missed it. I get on for my birthday in November and by Christmas it's open. You can bet that this year I will most definitely have one. These pictures are beautiful!

  8. They're gorgeous. I've wanted to try my hand at forcing bulbs, but the interior of our house is so dark, especially in the winter. If you were only going to see one Star Wars movie, you saw the best one (IMO). I used to really be into (the first three) movies, but when the next set came out, I had lost my interest, although my sons really liked them. Thanks for showing us your lovely blooms. Can't wait for spring, here in Northern Ohio.

  9. Just gorgeous! I used to force blooms every winter. I need to start this again. Such a little thing for big amount of happiness :)

I have never seen Star Wars either!! Never been into that "space stuff". Ha! Maybe there is a club for us. LOL!!
    Have a lovely!

  10. They look so pretty and spring-like! A breath of sunshine on this dreary day.
I am one of the five. I've seen bits of one of the newer ones, but not more than 10 minutes. They just don't do anything for me. Doesn't even come close to the Waltons! But I'm glad your scoring big points with the future SIL!

  11. Your paper whites are beautiful! Are there different varieties? Everyone says they smell good, but I tried some once and they smelled so much like pee that I threw them out. Yours are so pretty I want to try them again.

  12. I was in the audience for the very first Star Wars on the very first showing in Portland, Oregon. That was a mind bending experience. That was the best one and I am not sure if I've seen the rest.. but the first one is a classic. Love the flowers.. need me some of them. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  13. I cannot believe you've only seen one of the Star Wars movies! I have a clear memory of seeing the first one with a group of friends and even though I am not at all interested in that genre of movie, I was blown away. I don't think it will have too much of an impact on your MIL status though because I agree, money CAN buy love and your gift was very thoughtful! I have now tried (unsuccessfully) 2 years in a row to force some bulbs indoors. I've kind of given up at this point but they do look lovely during this time of year. Guess I'll just stick to fresh flowers.

  14. I love paperwhites, but alas...several years ago I force 100 paperwhites at Christmas. They all bloomed. My small house was thick with their scent. I started coughing; my throat felt tight, and I had to put them all out on the porch. Haven't been able to tolerate them since! Glad I can at least LOOK at your pretty pictures of them!
