Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all.  In honor of Mother's Day, I'd like to take you on a tour of  my gardens at Red Gate Farm.

The weather here this spring has been cool and rainy.  Most of my plants are behind schedule.  You really can't see much color from a distance yet.

Let's head around the front of the house... I still see some of my late purple tulips in bloom.... but not much else is happening yet.

At this time last year, the lupines were blooming.  And more importantly, the sun was shining.

The cement pots at the front of the house are full of petunias.  They're Wave petunias, if we ever get some warm weather they will cascade out of the pots.

This year has been so cool that even the Mother's Day Rhodie hasn't begun to bloom.  This is our 7th spring at Red Gate Farm and this is the first year that the Rhododendron isn't in bloom for Mother's Day.  This year...

past years...

In fact, this picture from this morning shows that the azalea is just starting to bloom... and check out that sky!  That's what it has been like most day.  Pretty bleak.

A brave, bright blossom.

If you like Hostas, this one is my favorite.  It's name is June and it is a medium size.  I love the leaves.  They look like a watercolor.

I finally pulled all of the pots and hanging baskets out of our greenhouse this morning.  The much needed color really cheers me up.

Lime green is one of my favorite colors, even in the garden.

Here it is again!

And who can resist the Creeping Charlie that grows out from under the garage door.  I love the look of old chippy wood and this cheerful, purple flowered plant.

I'm optimistic that the weather will warm up and be sunny soon... after all I planted 247 Zinnias this morning and they're going to need some sunshine if they ever want to look like this...

Hope you enjoyed the quick tour of Red Gate Farm and Happy Mother's Day,

  1. You have no idea how much I enjoyed my tour of the farm. Your plants and flowers are wonderful. That azalea tree was magnificent last year! With a little time and warmth that tree will be blooming before you know it!!
My Mother always plants Zinnias in memory of her father who loved them. I bet 247 Zinnias would just be spectacular!!! You will have to post a photo so I can share it with my Mom!!!
    Happy Mother's Day to you!!!!
    Love,
    Chris :o)

  3. Your garden looks like it's off to a great start! Send that rain my way. It sounds wonderful. We have only had an inch and a half so far this spring and our gardens and pastures need the moisture desperately.

  8. I hope you had a great Mother's Day. That Rhodie tree is amazing, we only have them in shrub form down here. And hostas are some of my fav, they are so beautiful and easy to divide, lots of bang for your buck!

  9. Still very pretty. Our plants and flowers are behind here too. Very depressing! I spent all day Sat. planting tons of geraniums I bought from my kid's 4-H clubs. They look pretty, they just don't have many blooms yet!

  21. It's a pleasure to visit your blog. What a lovely home and garden you have. I have several blog friends in WA and I know how rainy the weather has been this Spring. Here in GA, we have been really hot and dry this week. Your petunias will be very welcoming cascading out of the pots at the door. Have a great weekend.
