Feeling the need for a little sunshine right about now.....

It’s the first day of February… hard to believe that the first month of 2012 is behind us already!  Where did that month go?  I’m pretty sure I didn’t accomplish anything around the house or on my “to do list”.  Fortunately we tend to get sunnier weather in February than we do in January… hopefully it will hold true for us again because I could really use a bit of blue skies and sunshine around here!  I like to think that sunshine streaming in the windows gives me energy and inspires me to get projects done but really… I think it’s the sun magnifying every dust bunny and dingy corner that is really what gets me up and moving!!

Today’s turning of another calendar page did inspire me to get online and start picking out my seeds for ordering.  Tons and tons of zinnias this year, with extra whites and lime greens for the big event in August.

Of course, lots and lots of white impatiens from Park Seed…

Sweet peas, in many colors.  One of my favorite scents in the garden…

Sunflowers, of course…

One of my favorites, hollyhocks...

Wave petunias again, they were slow to grow but by August were FANTASTIC…

And to round out the order... last, but certainly not least, a variety of pumpkins from Burpee.

I did try saving some of my “mumsy marigold” seeds this past fall.  It was hard to not order some “just in case” the saved seeds do not germinate…. I didn’t see that they were any kind of hybrid but I’m still a little apprehensive about it… really, what will I put in their place if it’s a bust?  Do you see the way my mind works here?  YES, I worry about things that I have no control over!

The 2012 garden season is underway, in my mind at least, and possibly I’ll even get to get my hands in the dirt in the upcoming weeks…

And I do believe tomorrow is Groundhog Day, I can never remember how it works, but any which way, shadow or not, I’m hoping for that “early” spring,

  6. Usually January days and the month seem long and drawn out . . . This year though, where did it go? It flew by . . . Inspiration arrived today with beautiful photos from you of zinnias, impatiens, sweet peas and more! I ordered my seeds last week and the email order confirmation came through so they should be here soon. I am looking forward to creating a new, "just flowers" space. Exciting for me and hopefully the dream will become reality. Happy planning to you for your spring plantings.

  9. There were some rays of sun and blue sky out there today. Even though it was cold, I was grateful for the sun. I've been perusing on line seed companies too. Looking for heirlooms.

  10. That sun had better show up soon if you are to get all that planting flourishing! It shone for a couple of hours up here late this afternoon, but it was still cold.

  11. I get this way too...in the winter time.. In the summer not so much, and like a cloudy or stormy day to be inside. The Zinnia's going to give my hand a try at those. You plant all yours from seed? They are a lovely burst of color, and are sort of vintage...We have no sun today here in NE Ohio...about 37 degrees..the mind travels to gardenting and color, and doing inside homey things...I would like to plant some herbs this year, and am looking forward to finding Lemon Verbena...

  12. Ahhhh, such beautiful blooms. Love those hollyhocks. They were the first flowers I ever planted so they always hold a place dear. Although January literally flew by, it draws us closer to what we're really all waiting for ... SPRING!

  14. Beautiful blooms--that last photo is fantastic.
We're having unusually warm weather (for January/February) here in NC, but your photos make me long for spring time anyway.

  15. Hi Chris! I'm new to your blog! It looks like we both love to garden! Even though it is warm in the Midwest, I know I have a long way before I can plant anything. Your flowers are just beautiful. I love zinnias, my grandfather grew them everywhere! And sweet pea was new for me last year.

I have been reading a lot of Kristin Hannah books lately so I feel like I am getting to know the Seattle area and weather a lot better. I wish I could send you some of our sunshine! :-)

    XO,
    Jane

  17. YOur garden photos are always lovely, but I think that if I was a flower I would marry those hollyhocks! Thanks for the kind comment on my faux grainsack and platter of candles. It is still dark here so early and the candlelight at night is pretty.

  18. Today was sunny...yea!!! I'm so anxious to get outside! I should start looking at those catalogs too. I got a lot of great vegie seeds at Molbaks last month and am excited to get back into the garden. Do you start your seeds in a greenhouse first? I forget...love that greenish/pinkish zinnia!

  23. Hello,
I visited your blog today - I saw you on 'Martha's Favorites.' Your blog is so pretty. I loved all the flowers on here, especially the sunflower. The pumpkin picture is so vibrant. Me and my daughters started a blog, and we would love it if you could visit us and follow. I would enjoy coming back to visit with you. Your blog is very cheerful to me. I hope to hear from you, and have a nice evening.
