finishing up... the guest room

Back in December when making an offer on Kermit's Kastle, we realized it was time to get a few little projects finished around the house.  Perhaps you remember our work on the guest room last year?  Well there were a lot of little tweaks needed still.

So on Christmas Eve morning while I was trying to get a few "Christmas-y" things done, my husband decided it was time to hang a few things up in the guest bedroom... his timing is always so spot on.  But since I finally had him willing to do a little something, I had him hang up a shelf and mirror that I purchased last spring.  The shelf from a flea market and the mirror an antique store.  The paint finishes were an exact match so I knew I wanted to hang them together.

I love the chippy little towel rod on the mirror.  It also has a little glass shelf in front of the mirror but I didn't want to block the reflection by putting something on it.  This mirror hangs across from the big window and really helps bounce a bit of light around the room.

I placed a couple of treasures on the little shelf including this picture that I found a few years ago and just love.  I don't have a lot of yellow in my house so this room with it's yellow accents was perfect.

These tiny little pottery vases were my grandmother's.  One side is painted and the other side is plain white ceramic.  I like both sides so one faces each way...

And this little bench was my grandma's too.  I plan to make a new little cover... I keep finding different fabrics I like but I think the one on top is the winner.

Heading around the room I've also filled up this corner by the closet.

A stack of some of my vintage suitcases, two from the wedding and a brown one I've had for years.

The picture on top is a tinted black and white photo of "our" local mountain... Mount Baker.  We've been collecting these types of photos of Mt. Baker for a number of years and they line my hallway.  I decided I'd hang this one in the guest room but need to restring a wire for hanging... so here it sits.

Next to the suitcase tower is this cute vintage folding chair... again yellow, so it had to go in this room.  I have two of these that I picked up at a local antique store for just $10 each... and they are in fabulous condition.

This little pillow is wrapped with a piece of vintage bark cloth.  I've had this for a number of years and just can't bring myself to cut it up into anything.  It was originally a curtain valance.  I LOVE the country scene on it.

Moving around the room a bit more is the little dormer.... originally my grandma's bench was going to go here but I decided to put the luggage rack here instead with a couple more of my suitcases.  Since the rack is just a tad wobbly I feel it's more secure in the small dormer.

I've loaded up the top suitcase with other bits and pieces I picked up last year while getting this room "guest ready"....  a ruffled pillow, a couple of paint by number rose prints, a bit of linen and lace...

And some fun vintage wall paper scraps along with a piece of Japanese paper in just the right colors.  I may use some of this in the closet (in this room) when I get to that little project of making it pretty and practical with some shelves.

The curtains from Ikea were finally hung on Christmas Eve as well.  They are plain sheer white curtains.  I especially love this look in the spring and summer when the windows are opened and a gentle breeze floats them around.

And a vintage picture I picked up, sans frame, last summer at the Lydia Place sale (an annual sale that is a fundraiser for a local women's shelter) is hung using a vintage wooden pants hanger.

The end table finally has a clock for my guests.  I've always wanted one of these Moon Beam clocks... this one is a replica and is new.... but the perfect color!

On the other side of the bed, I moved in a vintage dresser that used to be in my sewing room.  The painted dresser originally here was moved downstairs to be my dresser.

The oil painting came from my son's house last year... and the Nancy Drew books are propping up a vintage hanky box with the cutest cottage picture on the front.

This little lamp moved up from the living room and still needs a better shade.

And I couldn't resist bringing my little tin barn in after Christmas when the tree came down.

It's a long weekend and I'm hoping to get some painting done in my bathroom today or tomorrow.... it's the room in our house that needs the most work still.

  1. Love this room, and love the little barn and tractor.

  2. Thank you for the tour. I think the tower of suitcases is my favorite. How pretty.

  3. Love this room! I would enjoy being your guest for sure. My favorite pieces are, the barn and the pictures hanging from the old wooden hanger. I hang quilt blocks like that as I get them finished and quilt wall hangings waiting to get finished.

  4. So pretty! Love the repeating blues and yellows.

  5. I agree...the blues and yellows really have a cheery and restful feeling; perfect for the guest room! Great job!

  6. Chris, what a charming room. The pop of yellow is just perfect. The piece of bark cloth with the red barn is so special..Happy Friday..Judy

  7. Your guest room is lovely and has so many pretty accents and great collectibles. I especially like the dresser and the tin barn.

  8. The room looks so beautiful with all your vintage pretties and treasures!! Love the painting hanging from a vintage hanger! So creative! xo Heather
