Cutting Garden

I love having cut flowers in my house... but I don't like cutting the flowers out of my flower beds!  So the first year we came to Red Gate Farm, I decided to grow flowers in my vegetable garden.  I have a fabulous book about vegetable gardens called the Vegetable Gardener's Bible.  It talks a lot about not growing certain vegetables next to each other.... another reason for flowers!  I like to have a few rows of flowers dividing the potatoes from the tomatoes...  Of course, it's great for pollination too since it really brings in the bees.

My favorite is the Zinnia.  It comes in so many colors and styles.

I also grow a lot of different varieties of Sunflowers.

Bachelor Buttons are always a nice filler in my vases.  And who can resist the Teddy Bear Sunflower.

And of course one of my very, very favorites... all kinds of old fashioned Sweet Peas for the kitchen window (please ignore the very dirty kitchen window), they smell soooo fabulous.

If you're planning to plant a vegetable garden this year, maybe make a little room for some cutting flowers.  You won't regret it!

We're almost to the weekend,

  1. Chris, This is probably one of the top reasons why I moved to the country. I have always dreamed of a cutting garden, but I never ever thought of mixing it in with the vegetable garden. Makes perfect sense! Oy! Thanks for the eye opener. : )

  4. Your flowers are beautiful. Do you grow them all from seed and do you save the seed?

  6. WOW beautiful gardens,
some times planting veggies and flowers together keep the critters and some bugs at bay from the veggies cause the smell of the flowers wards them off ! Have a wonderful day !
