Thankful...

November.  Thanksgiving.  Of course, a good time to remind us of what we can be thankful for.  Our family, our friends... food on the table... a roof over our heads.

As for the lighter side?

That roof over my head?   Well, once again, I'm changing things up a bit here at Red Gate Farm.  Perhaps you remember my garden gate, the one I got last Christmas?

I used it in a flower bed this spring and summer.... which I did really like... but it wasn't quite the perfect thing for this spot.

I grew sweet peas on it... just out my kitchen window.  But it still wasn't quite right.  And once we bought a couple of rolls of "fancy garden fencing" I knew this gate wouldn't work as an actual gate for said fencing... it was too tall.

I've seen folks use them in place of fire screens... but I don't have a fireplace.  What to do, what to do....

So of course, I brought it inside and I decided to hang it on my living room wall!  That's me, I like things a bit eclectic.... (although, please excuse the messy books and magazines on the bottom shelf.... should have noticed that BEFORE taking the picture!)  And it kind of dwarfs the big TV, don't ya think?  With a small house, no family room, the TV has to be in the living room... now it's got a little competition.

I must admit, when I told my husband... well... his reaction was a bit of "Uh, no... I don't want to hang the gate in the house."  I of course, said "Fine, I'll do it myself."

I didn't and he did...

First up, was taking down came my Pottery Barn swirly candle holder.... although I've always liked this, it has been 10 or 11 years since I first hung this... it was time for something different.

Up went the gate...

And of course... it's a new place to decorate... a bit of ephemera clipped here and there with teeny, tiny wooden clothespins.

And I'm thinking... perhaps some vintage Christmas balls hanging on it for the upcoming holidays?

Already planning all the things I can do with my gate,

I love the display with your gate.
I have one just like this, only rustier outside.
I have been trying to figure where I could hang it inside. I also have a little galvinized feeder like yours. Small world!!

  6. How original! I think you will enjoy it for quite a while. I have a gate that I just put out in front of my vegetable garden. I now have 2 clematis growing on it. But I get a lot of comments about "where's the fence?"

  7. I love that gate and I think it would look so sweet decorated for Christmas, and if I'm not mistaken, there is no shortage of Christmas decorations at your place. : )

  8. That looks like a good spot for it. Much better than using it as a firescreen that another blogger tried to do.

  9. That is brilliant. I love it. Never in a million years would I have thought to hang a gate on a wall. You can decorate it for every season, holiday etc. It looks perfect there. Nice job.

  11. That is cute!
I never thought of a gate being too tall for the fence. I didn't get my fence back up this year, so I don't know if my gate is too tall.

I just thought of something. With the gate being too tall, could your husband cut it down and weild the bottom rod back? Plus move the hardware for you. Maybe he could find another one to cut down, because it is cute on the wall!

  12. Love it, Chris! LOVE the "Be Thankful", and I'm thinking the Christmas ornament idea is a great one, too.
Oh, and what a good gate hanging hubby you've got for yourself!

  13. I have that same gate that I use outside in the summer and fall, but I always thought it would be the perfect place to hang Christmas cards and a banner. You must have used some "heavy duty" hardware to hang it. Those gates are heavy!!

Yours looks perfect in it's new spot.
