Recipe for life

Years ago, when I was in elementary school, my mother "did hair".  She went to a cosmetology school and then when to work as a "hair dresser".  A lot of her clients were the older women that came in for a Shampoo and Set.  When my mom changed jobs to something different, one tiny little lady started coming to our house on Saturdays for her Shampoo and Set.  Over the years she became our Auntie Peg.  She never had children of her own.

Auntie Peg passed away a couple of years ago.  I was lucky enough to become the keeper of a few of her things.

One was her sweets recipe box, apparently she had more than one recipe box...

This little box from the sixties is plum full, as you can see.  Most of the recipes are typed (on a real typewriter) on plain ol' index cards.

Some of the recipes sound delish,

some just sound interesting... really Party Size Angel Food Cake?  Who knew this existed!

I also have my mom's first copy of Betty Crocker's Cooky Book.

She gave it to me when she got a new, pages till attached copy.   You can find the favorites quickly, since they are the pages that are the messiest!

I've amassed a few cookbooks myself over the years.  As you can see, I'm partial to the Barefoot Contessa series!  On the top shelf, to the far right, is a copy of a cookbook a cousin made when my brother got married 22 years ago.  She had everyone in the family submit at least 4 or 5 recipes to be included in the book.  It's such a great idea since many of the grandmothers and great-aunts are no longer with us, but we have some of their recipes for us and future generations.

I too have a recipe box, a cute little metal Martha Stewart box.  Not so full, but it does hold MY recipes.  Many of OUR family's favorites.  Maybe one day some thoughtful person will be the keeper of my recipe box.... and wonder what in the world you do with a recipe for Tomato Soup Cake.

The days are getting longer and spring is almost here... I am a happy girl!

  1. I want some Cherry Slice! It looked yummy, maybe you could post some of Aunt Peg's recipes.

My mother in law still gets her hair curled and set. She went to Sumas for years and years to get it done.

  2. If I didn't know better, I would think I was looking at my collection as I own many that you have, including the old Betty C. Cooky Book. I keep collecting and I can't seem to stop (don't really want to) myself. I also get very excited when I come across old recipe boxes like you have from 'Auntie Peg', to me they are real treasures.

  15. That's funny. I have that same tourquoise Woman's World Cook Book (laying on it's side) that you do. I think I found it at Goodwill years ago. That is really cool that you have all those vintage recipes. Are you just gonna leave them in the cool recipe box or display them some way?

  16. I don't have any of my mother's recipes or cookbooks, but I have those that had belonged to my mother-in-law. Some of the cards say who the recipe came from. I need to get them out and look at them again!
