The sisters' sale

Every year, since 1988, a family of sisters get together and have a yard sale on Labor Day weekend.

I've passed by the house where the sale is held many times and always admired the gardens. They use found objects, old rusty tools, buckets, ladders, etc in the gardens.  When I first attended the sale I was so excited to see the place close up.  The sale consists of a lot of vintage pieces and perennial plants from the gardens.

Since this was only my 4th time to their sale,  I was surprised to learn that they had been hosting it, every year, for so long.  One of the sisters said I must have been in about first grade when they had their first sale.  I of course was extremely flattered and told  her actually I had my first baby in 1988.  In hindsight, she was probably just buttering me up so that I would purchase something!!

We've found many treasures there over the years and I've always looked forward to seeing their add just before the holiday weekend. This year was their final sale.  After purchasing my finds, I told the homeowner/sister how much I admired her gardens and asked if I could take a few photos.  I'm not the type of person to ask something like this of a virtual stranger, but didn't want to miss the opportunity, knowing I wouldn't be back.

  1. Hi Chris: I LOVE your new blog title picture. It is beautiful how the sunflower shows its colour but the background is black and white. You're quite the photographer. I won't even ask how you did it - I can't even figure out how to centre my title page picture! I have been really struggling with my blog this week - trying to link up to various parties, etc. And the frustrating part is most of my job is spent working on a computer so it's not like this is new to me. Oh well, I'll get it eventually.

I love the photos you took at the Labour Day sale. The property looks beautiful. Why is it their last sale? You must share your purchases. I would love to see what you bought.

Yes, our Canadian Thanksgiving is just around the corner but the tablecloth I have in my giveaway would even just look nice on the table during the Fall. This will soon be such a pretty time of year.

Hope you're enjoying your long weekend.

    Take care - Lisa

  3. Oh how I wish we had sales like that around here! When we lived in Wichita the sales started on Thursday (some as early as Wednesday) and usually lasted until Saturday late afternoon and there were TONS of them. Since we moved to a small farming town 2 years ago and then to the farm last year it's the only thing I miss about living in the city. After reading this post I'm thinking I need to drive into town and see if there are any garage sales going on! You sure found some nice treasures and got some nice pictures of the 'sister's garden. Good luck if you go 'sale-ing' this weekend...take care. Maura :)
